The President of the International Society for Hum The President of the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) thanked the Acting Liberian Minister of Internal Affairs Hon. Samuel F. Today for his spontaneous and enormous help to the Liberian refugees displaced from the refugee camp in Buduburam.

After visiting the camp in Ghana a few days after it was demolished and tens of thousands of refugees were displaced, the President of ISHR together with the Secretary General of ISHR, Matthias Boehning, asked Bishop Kortu Brown, Head of the Apostolic Church International of Liberia, to arrange a meeting with the Minister of Interior of Liberia, Hon. Francis S. Nyumanlin. Since he was out of the country, Bishop Kortu arranged a meeting with the Acting Minister of Interior, Hon. Samuel F. Today, who is also the CEO of the Ministry. He received the eyewitness accounts of the two men and took immediate action. The next day, the President of Liberia went public and criticized Ghana and Ghana in turn began to negotiate a solution. Schirrmacher and Boehning later had a long zoom session with the responsible people in the government of Ghana.

Hon. Samuel F. Today was Superintendent or Governor of Bomi County before taking office in the federal government, which Schirrmacher has visited several times because the Apostolic Church International of Liberia has several projects to educate rural people and help deaf children in the county, which includes large parts of the tropical rain forest of Liberia.

At four o’clock in the morning on February 27, p At four o’clock in the morning on February 27, people in the Buduburam refugee camp in Ghana were woken up from sleep by bulldozers. Suddenly, the Ghanaian government began demolishing large parts of the camp that morning. 15,000 people were directly affected and have since been seeking refuge in emergency accommodation in nearby churches and schools.

The refugee camp was set up in 1990 and mainly accommodates people from Liberia and (more recently) Burkina Faso who had fled to Ghana from civil war in their countries. Over the decades, tens of thousands of people have settled in Buduburam (which is about 1.5 hours west of the Ghanaian capital Accra and is also known as “Liberia Camp”). Estimates for the total number of people housed in the camp range between 45,000 and 60,000.

Criticism of the intertwining of power politics an Criticism of the intertwining of power politics and religion in Islamic countries

Professor Christine Schirrmacher from Bonn spoke at the Religious Freedom Congress in Giessen

The Giessen School of Theology (FTH) organized its first international symposium on Religious Freedom in mid-February. Experts from various countries discussed the tension between aspiration and reality in the implementation of religious freedom worldwide.

With regard to the immense restrictions on religious freedom in Islamic countries, Christine Schirrmacher discussed the reasons for this in her lecture “Religious freedom in Islamic countries”. According to the Bonn Professor of Islamic Studies, neither the colonial past in parts of the Middle East nor underdevelopment and poverty can convincingly explain the religious freedom that is universally deplored in Islamic countries in the Middle East. “Even the frequently expressed assumption that religious freedom and Islam are irreconcilable opposites per se does not hit the nail on the head, especially since there are some examples, especially in African Islamic countries, with a considerable degree of religious freedom”, Schirrmacher said.

The core sentence of her statement was: “It is above all the intertwining of power politics and religion in Islamic countries that hardly allows any freedom rights for women and for dissenters, including dissenting Muslims, but in any case, for Jews and Christians, but also atheists or religions not recognized in Islam.” The Islamic scholarly world, Schirrmacher continues, especially mosques and theological training centres, are under close state control and have as much leeway as state rulers allow their representatives, while the powerful state apparatus has its respective policies legitimized “islamically” by the scholarly world in exchange for participation in power. “Freedom rights can hardly grow on this soil”, was the conclusion.

In Cape Verde, ISHR leaders Schirrmacher and Böhn In Cape Verde, ISHR leaders Schirrmacher and Böhning met with President, Prime Minister, Speaker of Parliament, and other top leaders

The President of the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR), Thomas Paul Schirrmacher, and the ISHR Secretary General, Matthias K. Böhning, expressed their gratitude for the many opportunities for discussion in Cape Verde.

During their visit, the two human rights activists were able to see for themselves the positive development of the country and noted with pride that Cape Verde has developed into a strong parliamentary democracy.

Schirrmacher and Böhning also found the many discussions with politicians and dignitaries from Cape Verde a privilege. Among the interlocutors were President José Maria Neves and First Lady Débora Katísa, Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva, the Speaker of Parliament Austelino Tavares Correia and the President of the National Commission for Human Rights and Citizenship of Cape Verde (CNDHC), Eurídice Mascarenhas, Bishop Cardinal Arlindo Gomes Furtado and Archbishop Waldemar Stanisław Sommertag. These pictures give an insight into the trip and the meetings.

Schirrmacher calls for joint commitment to religio Schirrmacher calls for joint commitment to religious freedom at the first symposium on religious freedom at the Giessen School of Theology

From February 13–14, the Chair for Religious Freedom of the Giessen School of Theology (FTH) hosted the first international symposium on religious freedom. Experts from various countries drew attention to the multifaceted interplay between aspiration, reality and the resulting challenges in the area of religious freedom.

In his introductory statement, the President of the International Institute for Religious Freedom (IIRF), Prof. Dr. Dr. Thomas Paul Schirrmacher, called on Christians to stand up confidently for freedom of religion and belief. The root of the idea of a free practice of religion goes back to Christian and Jewish movements of the 16th and 17th centuries. Over time, it has spread to all religions and worldviews, and each direction now “must find its own way from its central teachings toward religious freedom”. In this context, mutual dialogue and discussion with all faiths is crucial to prevent religious extremism and ensure peaceful coexistence.

Schirrmacher also emphasized that religious freedom, persecution, and martyrdom must again play a central role in systematic theology and concluded his statement with an appeal:

“This is a call to Christian scholars in all relevant fields of academic research to engage in religious freedom studies and to join the growing global community of scholars. But it is also a call to Christian scholars to collaborate with scholars of all faiths or no faith, and to prepare the results of their research so that they can be shared and discussed with any scholar of good will around the world, and so that they can be used by media, governments, and parliaments, which usually represent a mix of worldviews.”

The president of the International Society for Hum The president of the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) expressed “pride” on January 14, in noting that Cape Verde has a “strong parliamentary democracy”, highlighting that “the power of the people is in parliament.”

“We as the International Society for Human Rights are monitoring Cape Verde and we started this a year ago. We are very happy and proud to see that this is a strong parliamentary democracy,” he said.

Archbishop Thomas Schirrmacher made these statements in Praia after meeting with the president of the National Assembly, Austelino Correia.

During the meeting, the ISHR leader stated that parliament “has the real power” in the country, being respected by the other powers.

Schirrmacher also highlighted Cape Verde’s commitment to human rights and cooperation with the National Human Rights Commission, which, as he highlighted, has worked “effectively” on social issues.

The president of ISHR also took the opportunity to highlight the importance of greater cooperation between Cape Verdean institutions and international organizations.

This official acknowledged the challenges the country faces, such as poverty and the need for investment in areas such as social inclusion and accessibility and also praised the efforts of the Government and local authorities to overcome them.

On the other hand, he expressed interest in seeing the relationship between the archipelago and the German parliament deepened, having reiterated the commitment of the International Society for Human Rights to support the Cape Verdean nation in its achievements and ongoing challenges in favor of justice and human dignity.

“In Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana, Durrës, an “In Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana, Durrës, and All Albania I have lost a mentor and fatherly friend”

An obituary by Thomas Paul Schirrmacher: https://bonn-profiles.net/?p=8191
Since 1988, Prof. Dr. Thomas Schirrmacher has argu Since 1988, Prof. Dr. Thomas Schirrmacher has argued—first in essays, then in his commentary on the letter to the Romans—that the letter to the Romans primarily serves to justify world mission from the Holy Scriptures, i.e. the Old Testament, and that Paul’s theology is inextricably linked to his missionary practice.

“The introduction and conclusion of the letter to the Romans,” says Schirrmacher”, do not simply describe the occasion for the letter, but already set out the central theme. Dogmatics and mission are thus only the two flip sides of the same coin.” According to Schirrmacher, the Western church has strongly emphasized the dogmatic character of the letter to the Romans, but at the same time has all too often lost its missionary character.

The new book ‘Der Römerbrief als Charta der Weltmission’ [‘The letter to the Romans as a charter for world mission’] not only compiles Schirrmacher’s contributions on the subject since 1993, but also includes a comprehensive history of the thesis that the letter to the Romans is a call to world mission (“mission thesis”), which compiles all the representatives known to the author since 1863.
